Unit Overview
This is a five-day unit that allows students to delve deeper into the topic of renewable and nonrenewable resources. The purpose of this unit is to have students develop a greater understanding of new energy and the repercussions of using up nonrenewable resources while utilizing strategic thinking. At the end of the unit the students will be able to 'create a town' fully powered by sustainable resources or build their own form of new energy.
Day One: What is Energy? - Brainstorm where energy comes from and what we can use it for
Day Two: Why is it important not to waste energy?- Energy conservation contract
Day Three: What else can we use for energy?- Determine why we use more nonrenewable resources and which renewable resources could be used by other states
Day Four: Determine the Differences between renewable and nonrenewable- Renewable/non-renewable worksheet and class game
Day Five: Create your own!- Draw, create, or write about a renewable resource or their own town powered by new energy
The standards that are covered coincide with the Arizona Common Core Standards for Fourth Grade Science:
PO 2. Differentiate renewable resources from nonrenewable resources.
PO 3. Analyze the effect that limited resources (e.g., natural gas, minerals) may have on an environment.
PO 4. Describe ways in which resources can be conserved (e.g., by reducing, reusing, recycling, finding substitutes).
Day three has a full lesson plan using the standard:
PO 2. Differentiate renewable resources from nonrenewable resources
